Boone Boys Frontiersmen
and their Great Wild West Show
The Autobiography of Pecos Pate Boone revised and republished by Clyde Douglas Boone now available for only $24.95 in hardback 336 pages with dustcover. Spring of 2005- Pecos Pate Boone’s retelling of his life story and the story of the birth of the Boone Boys Wild West Show tells the story of emigration to Texas after the Civil war and life on the Texas frontier as it moved west in the period from 1880 through 1925. Homesteader, Cowboy, Marksman, Showman, Blacksmith, Spur maker, Antique dealer, but best of all a first rate storyteller! Thomas Payton Boone 1887 – 1980 known to all as simply Pecos Pate after getting lost as a teenager in the Pecos river valley while rounding up free range cattle. An Excerpt… “I jumped down from my horse, picked up the bomb and heaved it over the sidewall. As it exploded outside our tent, Oscar Boyles, the clown, caught sight of the boys who threw it and took out after them - but armed only with old six shooters loaded with soap bullets.” Thus begins one of the many funny and exciting stories Pate tells of his Wild West Show meeting the real wild west of frontier town life in rural Oklahoma of 1913. Almost accidentally he and his brother Bob discover newcomers from back east would pay good money to see him try to break the wild Mexican horses they brought back to Texas after fleeing the drought of 1903. As they took their show on the road, they also found to their delight local cowboys who would pay to ride the stock to show their own talent. Pate tells of the actual birth of the Rodeo as an exhibition and as a sport. This book indexes the talents of some 40 early rodeo cowboys and cowgirls and lists many of the more famous stock on which they road to early fame. The Wild West Show of the early 1900’s features men who were tough and every small town had its own men with tough reputations. When a local cowboy was shown up by the visitor’s stock or the visitor’s talent, the show company had to deal with the resulting hard feelings which in the case of this one rural crossroads community turned violent. Other stories relate to the great rides of some otherwise forgotten cowboy who was exceptionally good at his trade and who would become a successful showman regardless of background race or family connections. Pate’s stories paint a picture of the exciting life of a kid growing upon the nineteenth century frontier of Texas and as a young homesteader and cowboy trying to build a ranch in the desert of the New Mexico Territory. Still other stories detail the frontier women who were not only Cowgirls as talented as the men in their own ways, but also provided the spice of the 20 era’s flappers. Pate, always the proper gentleman, insisted on dancing with each new “dime-a –dance” girl who traveled with the show to check that she was wearing a proper corset! (He obtained letters of decency in this way from the local clergy to pass on in the next town at which the show was to play in order to get permits for a dancehall.) Their Wild West Show was exceptionally successful and later joined by their younger brothers Clyde and Dee the Boone Boys Wild West Show grew to over 150 employees and its own private train replacing the original canvas covered show Wagons.
